Independence

SkipperPrep is an independent online study platform. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) or any other training body. References to the “RYA” and to the “Day Skipper” course exist solely to describe the qualification our material can help you prepare for. All lesson content on this site is original material written by SkipperPrep; we do not reproduce RYA course notes, training almanacs, practice charts or examination papers.

Not a substitute for formal training

Completing SkipperPrep does not award any qualification and does not certify you to skipper a vessel. Formal training with a recognised sea school — including assessed theory and practical courses — is the only route to certification, and no online course can replace instruction, supervision and experience gained on the water.

Navigation and safety information

We work hard to make our teaching accurate and consistent with internationally recognised sources such as the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) and IALA buoyage guidance. However, material on this site is provided for educational purposes only and may contain errors or become outdated. Never use SkipperPrep for real-world navigation. Always rely on official, up-to-date charts, almanacs, notices to mariners and forecasts, and on your own judgement and training.

Worked examples and practice data

Tide tables, chart extracts, port details and vessel positions used in lessons, quizzes and tools are simplified and often fictitious, designed for teaching technique rather than reflecting real places or conditions. They must not be used for passage planning.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, SkipperPrep accepts no liability for any loss, damage or injury arising from use of this website or reliance on its content. Going to sea carries inherent risk; the skipper of a vessel is always responsible for the safety of their crew and boat.
