Theory done, the practical course is where it all comes alive: for most students, five days living aboard a cruising yacht, sailing real passages in real weather. Before anything else, settle the one question that causes most pre-course nerves.

How the week is structured

Most schools run five consecutive days living aboard; some use two long weekends. Crews are small — typically three to five students plus the — so everyone gets real time on the helm and in charge. The boat is usually a cruising yacht of 32 to 40 feet with berths, a galley (the kitchen) and a heads (the toilet).

A typical five day practical course. Details vary between schools, but the arc from drills to skippered passages is near universal.

The week is an arc of growing responsibility. Early days: boat handling and drills close to base. Later days: real passages, with students taking turns as skipper of the day while the instructor steps back to advise. By the last day you should be making the decisions, not just steering.

Evenings close with a debrief — a short, honest review of what went well and what to work on — and at least one sail is normally made in darkness, because night pilotage is part of the standard. Life aboard is compact: shared cabins, limited water and power, everyone taking a turn at cooking. A skipper who understands the domestic side runs a happier ship.

Knowledge check

On a typical practical course, what is the role of the skipper of the day?

From day one the instructor rotates jobs: on any manoeuvre one student helms, one works the foredeck, one trims sheets, one navigates. A skipper must understand every job well enough to brief it, so you will do each of them many times.

Instructor
A qualified professional who lives aboard with you, teaches the syllabus, keeps everyone safe, and confirms you reach the standard by the end of the week.
Shakedown sail
A short first sail to check the boat, introduce the crew to the deck layout, and let the instructor gauge everyone's starting level.

When your turn comes, you plan the passage the evening before or that morning: tidal heights for departure and arrival, a course to steer where there is cross tide, pilotage plans for both harbours, a weather check. It is exactly the material from your theory modules — which is why arriving with it fresh transforms the week.

Knowledge check

During a mooring exercise your approach goes wrong: the angle is bad and you are coming in too fast. What response best matches what instructors want to see?

The standard being assessed is whether you could take a yacht on a coastal passage by day, in familiar waters, in moderate conditions, keeping your crew safe. Polish is not the test. Judgement is — which is why the calm go-around above reads so well.

  • Safety awareness — lifejackets on when appropriate, crew briefed, nobody surprised by the boom.
  • Planning — tide and weather checked before leaving, and a pilotage plan you can actually follow.
  • Decision making — you notice conditions changing and act, like reefing early or choosing a different berth.
  • Communication — clear briefings before manoeuvres and clear commands during them.
  • Recovery — when something goes wrong (it will), you stay calm, keep the crew safe and sort it out.
  • Refresh the theory used daily: tidal heights, course to steer, buoyage, and the give-way rules.
  • Read the school's joining instructions: arrival time, parking, bedding, food arrangements.
  • Sort any seasickness medication in advance (more in the kit lesson).
  • Sleep well before joining day — the first day is long.
  • Bring a small notebook for commands, checklists and debrief points.

Your turn

Imagine you join the boat on Saturday afternoon. Write down five questions you would want answered in the first hour aboard, before the boat leaves the berth.

Work it through on paper first — then check yourself against the solution. Reading a worked answer feels like learning; producing one is learning.
