A sailing yacht cannot sail straight into the wind — and everything about handling one flows from that single fact. A sail only drives at an angle to the wind; the skill is choosing and holding those angles, and turning cleanly between them.

The Points of Sail

The wind is coming directly over the port side of your boat, at right angles to your course. What point of sail are you on?
Close-hauled on starboard tack — mainsail sheeted hard in (boom 3° off the centreline).
Bear away and the sheet goes out; head up and it comes in. Same sail, same wind, different angle.
Know which tack you are on as part of that picture: it is the first thing the collision rules ask when two sailing boats meet.
- Beating
- Zig-zagging upwind, close-hauled on one tack and then the other, because no boat sails straight into the wind.
- Head to wind
- Pointing straight into the wind, sails flapping — used deliberately when hoisting sails or picking up a mooring.
Tacking: the Bow Through the Wind

Two turns swap the sails to the other side: the tack (bow through the wind) and the gybe (stern through the wind). Predict: in which turn does the mainsail stay full of wind until the moment it swaps sides?
Progress upwind is made close-hauled on one tack, then the other, like a walker zig-zagging up a steep slope. In the tack the bow swings through the wind and the sails cross to the other side. Carry good boat speed into the turn — momentum takes you through the no-sail zone. Turn too slowly and you stall , in irons, and must wait, sails flapping, until she falls off onto one tack again.
- Helm checks for sea room and traffic, then warns the crew: Ready about!
- Crew prepare — the loaded headsail sheet is made ready to release, the lazy (new) sheet is loaded on its — and reply: Ready!
- Helm calls Lee-oh! and turns the bow steadily through the wind.
- As the headsail collapses and begins to fill on the other side, crew release the old sheet and haul in the new one.
- Helm steadies on the new close-hauled course; crew trim and tidy the lines.
Gybing: the Stern Through the Wind
In the gybe the stern passes through the wind. Because the mainsail stays full to the last moment, a controlled gybe centres the mainsheet before the turn — hauling the boom to the middle of the boat — then turns, and eases the sheet out promptly on the new side. Same destination as a tack; entirely different manners.

- Crew centre the mainsheet, bringing the boom under control , prepare the headsail sheets and reply: Ready!
- Helm calls Gybe-oh! and turns the stern smoothly through the wind.
- The boom comes across under control; the mainsheet is eased promptly on the new side and the headsail is trimmed across.
- Helm steadies on the new course; everyone re-checks that heads are below boom height.

Under Power: What the Propeller Really Does

Your yacht has a right-handed propeller. As you come alongside and engage astern to take off the last of your speed, what will the stern do?
That sideways kick is prop walk: a rotating propeller does not only push water aft, it also paddles the stern sideways — strongly in astern, weakly in ahead. Two more effects complete the picture. Prop wash: in ahead, the propeller blasts water straight across the rudder, so a burst of ahead power with the helm over spins the boat even with no speed on. And a rudder without water flow does nothing: going astern, you must wait for sternway before the rudder bites.

Skilled skippers stop fighting prop walk and use it. A right-handed boat berths most sweetly port side to: the burst of astern that stops her also tucks the stern alongside. And to spin in a confined space, turn to starboard: alternate bursts of ahead (prop wash kicks the stern to port) and astern (prop walk pulls it to port again), and she pirouettes in little more than her own length.
Wind in the Marina
At sailing speeds the keel dominates; at marina speeds the wind does. The tall, unweighted bow blows downwind readily — the bow blows off — while the keel and rudder aft hold the stern. So plan every slow-speed manoeuvre around the wind: approach a berth into it when you can, so the wind is your brake; expect the bow to fall away the moment you stop; and always know your . Deciding to go around again is not a failure — it is the mark of a skipper in control.
Your turn
You are berthing a yacht with a right-handed propeller in the marina at Westhaven. Two alongside berths are free on a straight pontoon: one would put the pontoon on your port side, the other on your starboard side. The wind is blowing straight along the pontoon towards you (you will approach into the wind). Which berth do you choose, and why? What will your final burst of astern do?
